Subscription vs pay-as-you-go

When does the API beat your $20 subscription?

ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Gemini Advanced all cost ~$20/month. Whether that's a deal depends entirely on how much you use them. Model your volume below — we compare against the API price of each plan's flagship model.

Assumes a typical chat message: ~1,500 input tokens (with system prompt) + 500 output.

The honest math: subscriptions win when you chat a lot on one provider's flagship models. The API wins when you (a) use cheaper models, (b) batch with 50% batch discounts, (c) cache aggressively, or (d) need multiple providers. Subscriptions carry soft usage caps; APIs replace those with explicit account quotas, rate limits, and capacity constraints.

The hidden variable: usage caps

Subscriptions look cheap until you hit the wall. Every plan throttles heavy users — ChatGPT Plus limits messages per 2 hours, Claude Pro per 5-hour window. If you've ever seen "you've reached your limit, try again at…", your effective price per usable message just went up. APIs are billed consistently per token, but still enforce account quotas, request-rate limits, and capacity controls.
